At six, tin roofs ring. A grey captain lifts one wing. A crumb lands on the ledge. The flock gathers. One crow taps a rusted pipe. Sparrows answer from the eaves. He calls the morning roll. Each rooftop answers: Here. One on the chimney. Two along the wire. Three on the water tank. The roofs keep time. By noon, a silver net snags low across the tin. One wing shakes chimney dust. One beak finds the loose end. Hundreds pull together. One corner comes loose. No hero takes the whole sky. They leave it open. A call crosses ten roofs. An answer crosses ten more. Along the wire, they make room. A small bird slips through. Each rooftop answers: Here.
Lyrics
Who wakes the rooftops? We do, we do! Who gets the morning? Me and you! At six, the tin roofs ring. One grey captain lifts a wing. A crumb lands on the ledge. The whole flock gathers round. One crow taps a rusted pipe. The sparrows answer back. He calls the morning roll. Each rooftop answers, “Here!” One on the chimney. Two on the line. Three on the water tank. All keeping time. Over the roofs we fly. Nobody owns the sky. By noon, a silver net Has crossed the warm tin roof. One wing shakes the chimney dust. One beak finds a loose end. Then hundreds pull together. The metal buckles in the sun. No hero takes the whole sky. They leave a gap for all. One on the chimney. Two on the line. Three on the water tank. All keeping time. Over the roofs we fly. Nobody owns the sky. A call crosses ten roofs. An answer crosses ten more. Make room along the wire. The morning has one voice. Over the roofs we fly. Nobody owns the sky.
