A recorded reading of “Signal Through Rain”. If the player does not load, use the original audio source.
On the roof, the antenna leans towards a weather system. Rain threads each wire until the whole building seems strung from one wet note. Inside, I turn the radio slowly. Static. A voice. Static. Someone is saying a place name I cannot catch. The window fills with water, then clears for a second. Across the street, another window answers with its ordinary light. I do not need the message whole. I need to know it travelled.
Lyrics
(mm-mm) The antenna on the roof is bent. The rain is in the wire. I turn the dial through empty rooms. And hear a small choir. Every station says a different thing. Every voice comes through in shards. I keep one hand upon the radio. And one hand over my heart. I do not need a perfect answer. I do not need a clear sky. I only need one sign to tell me. You are still on the other side. Send a signal through rain. I will answer your name. Send a signal through rain. I will answer your name. The streetlights blur into water. The windows shine like boats. I think of every word we lost. And every word we wrote. I cannot bring the old world back. But I can stand beneath the noise. And call across the rain. If you hear this, keep breathing. (ssshh) If you hear this, come as you are. Send a signal through rain. I will answer your name. Send a signal through rain. I will answer your name. (mm-mm)
