Boots in the blue air, dust in my teeth. My laces buzz like power lines. The canyon splits the light, sunlight breaking in copper sheets across the other side. I’ve got my knees above forever, my shadow swinging low. The cliffs wear fire on their backs and dare me not to go. I lean one inch. The world gets loud. My heart kicks stones into the clouds. Red rock pulls me close. I won’t let go. Red rock pulls me close. I won’t let go. A red hawk cuts a circle through the torn-up blue. All the roads I never took come burning past my shoes. My feet are two small boats above a stone-black sea. Every old version of me says, “Is this me?” I laugh out once. It falls for miles. The sky leans in and shows its teeth. Red rock pulls me close.
