Above our heads the text unspools in shy neon: v2.1: reduced jealousy by 12%. On the café chalkboard someone writes ALMOND, then rubs it out so faint ghosts remain. (A) I hold a bus card with a debt I can’t swipe through. (B) You peel label-maker tape from your coat— last week’s DEPENDABLE curling back to plastic, tape scuffed to the colour of a car-park scape. A stranger’s patch notes glitter on the train— hotfix: stares less on trains— and he stares at us on the train. Our notes disagree with us. In the window we are us, the messy noun, not the tidy verbs we’ve been assigned. (A) I could jailbreak the halo over my head. (B) I could enter a dev code and claim my rage back. Together we read the T&C in small-print weather. We don’t hack. We don’t comply. We walk, unpatched, to the river where signs forbid nearly everything. A boom chain knuckles the current, and the water minds its own set of versions.
