I thought leaving would feel like an answer. Instead, my body found the pause it had kept under the tongue. Then my mouth rehearsed its old terms: be grateful. be harder. walk away clean. I let each one go unanswered. For once, silence was not a verdict. It was room enough to hear the want beneath my fear— untrained, unimpressive, still alive. When I stood, nothing had forgiven me. But the voice that called escape freedom no longer sounded like mine.
