I lower the red pump into a basin and press the bulb. The crack answers first: a chain of air-pearls lifts from the enamel, each bead swelling until the water takes it. Under the bench lamp the casing deepens to boiled-sugar red. Flux smokes in its tin. The screwdriver keeps a black crescent of my thumb. Inside, the valves rehearse their narrow argument: clench, release, clench, release— two doors sharing one storm. All night I try to make the flaw smaller. Solder flowers, dulls. The file sings up a bitter red dust. By dawn I stop. I clean the seam, open the vice, give the machine back its pressure. No one would call it mended. The gauge rises. The basin clears. Along the split, a blue pilot-light holds— exact as a pin in the one place the casing cannot close.
