A recorded reading of “Last Train, First Light”. If the player does not load, use the original audio source.
The last train takes its windowed rooms through the station without stopping. On the platform, a ticket softens in my closed hand. Each carriage holds a different square of light: a face asleep, a bottle, a child counting the poles backwards. I have missed it on purpose. At the far end of the track, the guard lifts one arm, then lets it fall. Morning is not visible yet. But the rails keep the first colour of it under their skin.
Lyrics
(mm-mm) Last train, nearly empty. Wet coats on plastic seats. The doors close on the platform. Then the city starts to leave. I have your words in my pocket. A ticket in my hand. I read both things until the names. Stop looking like a plan. The windows show my older face. The dark gives nothing back. I do not need to solve tonight. I only need this track. Last train, first light. I will make it through tonight. Last train, first light. I will meet the morning light. A cleaner mops the end of town. A guard looks up, then down. The river under the bridge is black. I miss the station that we shared. The carriage keeps its simple promise. Forward through the rain. One stop. (chk-chk) Then another. I am still here. Last train, first light. I will make it through tonight. Last train, first light. I will meet the morning light. (mm-mm)
