At nine, the company discovered empathy. They placed it in a slide deck between the mission statement and the coffee budget. The colour was called Warm Blue. A woman laughed beside a laptop whose screen showed only the photographer’s ceiling. By ten, empathy was mandatory for all customer-facing staff. By noon, the staff were gone. The customers kept receiving personalised apologies from a form that knew their names well enough to send them back to the queue.
