1. The first person stands near the library van’s open door. She holds three books against her chest and leaves a space beside her for the stroller behind her.
2. The stroller is empty. Its owner is searching a bag for the card that opens the returns box. The woman with the books steps aside so the van’s ramp can lower.
3. A boy returns a book with a torn paper cover. He says he found it that way. The librarian asks whether he wants a replacement sleeve. He says no and waits while she checks the account.
4. Two people arrive together, then separate because one needs to leave before the van does. The line becomes two lines for a moment, one for returns and one for questions.
5. A man at the back notices the woman’s books slipping. He offers to hold one. She passes him the thickest, a gardening guide with a pressed leaf at page 42.
6. The stroller moves forward as its owner finds the card in the bag. She does not return a book; she asks whether the van will bring large-print titles next week. The librarian writes the request on a pad.
7. The boy takes a fresh sleeve. He does not say he changed his mind.
8. The woman retrieves her gardening guide from the man. The line has moved around them, leaving the pressed leaf visible in the gutter.
9. The van door stays open. People continue arriving, but no one is at the back for long.
10. The man who held the gardening guide steps aside to let a person with a cane reach the ramp. He asks whether the van will be back before the school term ends. The librarian checks the timetable rather than guessing.
11. It will be. The woman with the cane returns a large-print book and asks for the next volume. The librarian adds it below the stroller owner’s request, then writes the next visit date on her receipt. She steps away from the ramp; the line takes her place.
