The Illusion of Perspective: Everyday Objects Reimagined

Turns out, you don’t need a volcano to create the effect of glowing lava—just a creative eye and the right angle.

In this series, I used everyday items to mimic the appearance of molten lava. Swipe through the images and see if you can guess what objects I used. The final photo reveals the “big secret” behind the illusion.

Surprised? Yup, it’s just a seashell held up to a light source!

How It Came Together

One evening, while fiddling with some seashells, I noticed how one of them reflected light in unexpected ways. Held up to a bright spotlight, the semi-translucent shell seemed to glow, shifting between red and yellow like hot lava. I grabbed my camera and voilà—lava illusion, no magma necessary!

This series isn’t really about the object itself. It’s about reimagining the ordinary, bending perception, and seeing something familiar in a completely new light.

Behind the Scenes: Setting the Stage

  • Location: My living room—because the best ideas often don’t wait for a fancy studio setup.
  • Timing: Late evening, when packing away some seashells. An ordinary moment turned extraordinary by just the right angle of light.
  • Lighting: I used a bright spotlight to bring out the shell’s texture and create that signature lava glow. A handheld light source gave me extra control over shadows and highlights, ensuring the camera captured every detail without overexposing the shot.

  • Camera: Sony WX300 Ultra Zoom Digital Camera
  • Tripod: Joby GorillaPod Magnetic Tripod
  • Lighting: Portable solar charger LED light and a standard spotlight

No high-end gear here—just a sharp eye, a bit of patience, and a dash of experimentation.

The Creative Spark

The inspiration came from simply observing how light interacts with surfaces. This isn’t just about photography; it’s about finding the magic in the mundane. Most of my work revolves around challenging how we perceive everyday objects, transforming them into something unexpected and surreal.

Zero Edits, Pure Creativity

Normally, I’d tweak my shots digitally, but this series needed no editing. The raw captures were so compelling, I didn’t want to alter a single pixel.

Remember, photography is about more than just capturing a scene—it’s about transforming it. What you see isn’t always what it seems. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of light, perspective, and a little bit of imagination. 💡
